Create a Matte Complexion
“In winter, skin should look more matte,” says Dempsey.
She uses a weightless mousse foundation that dries to a semimatte finish, yet remains transparent and moisturizing.
“And you don’t need powder to set it.”
If you like a dewier finish, go with a liquid foundation or tinted moisturizer.
For natural, barely-there coverage, apply foundation to the center of the face first.
The same goes for warmer, sunny tones of eye shadow and blush.
“A golden glow looks a little ridiculous in the dead of winter,” says Dempsey.
Instead, opt for fresh, matte skin sans shimmer and shine on the cheeks or lips.
“The vivid shades of summer can take a backseat,” says Dempsey.
Switch to a dusty rose or a muted apricot blush in a creamy formulation that blends into the skin.
“Powder blush tends to sit on top of the skin and look unnatural.”
“Invest in a beautiful lipstick, and in winter a richer tone is right,” recommends Dempsey.
Ditch the candy colors for a rich, natural plum tone.
To create a stained effect, use an emollient lipstick that won’t be too shiny or overly retro-matte.
(A cream-to-powder formulation can be applied with a fingertip, and won’t crease or look crepey.)
“I trace it across the lower lash line too, to catch some light underneath the eye.”
Add definition with smudged black or brown liner and a coat of mascara.
