I thought that I physically couldnt do it, that I wouldnt be accepted by the running community.
I grappled with feeling like an imposter.
To my utter surprise, my first run leader was a plus-size woman.

This was before body-positive Instagram accounts existed, so I didnt realize that plus-sizerunnerswere out there.
I couldnt fathom that someone with a body just like mine would be leading the packbut there she was.
That was the beginning of my total mind-set shift on what it meant to be a runner and athlete.

I realize showing up to a5K racecan be intimidating.
After all, runners are often represented as ultra-lean endurance machines.
However, the truth is the running community is quite diverse and very welcoming.

I always set my clients up with shuffling before running.
The less impact you have with the pavement, the less likely you are to develop an injury.
But to start, low and slow builds runners without injury.
When you first start running, intervals are the way to go.
In the beginning, very short intervals are ideal and will start to condition your body to run.
Maintain good posture, with your shoulders back and your gaze looking forward, not down.
Good posture helps prevent injury and a strong vertical position allows for your lungs to have full breathing capacity.
Many of my clients mention they struggle with breathing in the beginning.
Monitoring your pace with an electronic machine is a great way to stay in an aerobic zone.
Take note of those moments when things seem perfectly manageable and note your pace and heart rate.
Some plans train you to do that in intervals of 10-minute runs followed by 1-minute walks.
The point is to go the distance in a way that works for you and your body.
The 5K distance is a big accomplishment and something to be proud of.
have a go at stay mentally positive and have fun with the process along the way.
Regardless of your body size, you are a runner and that is something to own!
Just like any significant goal, there will be ups and downs.
