I like to think of myself as a veteranfitness class-goer.
My friends would probably even call me an OG group fitness devotee.
Thats also what made me decide to make a run at lead my own about a year ago.

I got mypersonal training certificationin November 2016 and started working one-on-one with clients the following January atUplift Studiosin NYC.
(My nerves definitely got the best of me.)
You probably hear instructorsespecially those in fast-paced classeswooing at you in an attempt to give you a boost.
Maybe you love it, maybe you hate it.
Maybe you just ignore it.
Im also looking for feedback so that I can double-check the class is going well for everyone.
Youre thinking about pizza?I wonder what Im doing wrong and what I could be doing differently.
But when at least one person responds back with a hearty wahoo!
Fifteen years of being a cheerleader will do that to you.
Most instructors have a go-to word they use to give feedback or encouragement.
(Mine was beautiful when I was training to become an instructor.)
But the more you say something, the less meaning it seems to have.
It makes it hard to keep trusting that trainers words.
I could encourage you in the way your friend might (you got this, girl!
Ultimately, they all have the same end goal, but evoke a very different feeling.
The catch is, I cant say just say anything.
I have to believe it myself, otherwise the delivery is off.
Turns out that the way an instructor carries themselves can completely change how students respond.
And correcting it without distracting the student can get difficult.
Uplift encourages hands-on instruction, helping class-goers hone in on exactly how to execute an exercise.
So my eyes are always peeled, trying to find anyone who needs an adjustment.
Sometimes everyones form looks great, other times a few people could benefit from a tweak or two.
Sometimes I worry I’m missing too much of the class to focus on a few people’s form.
For now, Im just embracing the pace and doing my best to keep up.
My fellow Uplift instructors warned me.
Dont read them, they said.
Theyre brutal, they said.
Theyll bring you down, they said.
Not everyone is going to like my class, and thats OK (I think).
Honestly, shes probably right.
My go-tos include music from the ’90s and 2000s,Beyonce, andRihanna.
