Her heritage unfortunately became a target for her opponent, Sen. Mark Kirk,during an election debate.
Kamala Harris
California DemocratKamala Harrisalso had a historic win.
She’s also the first African-American senator to represent California.
Harris will take over Sen. Barbara Boxer’s seat, who is retiring after serving four terms.
Pramila Jayapal
In the House of Representatives, Washington DemocratPramila Jayapalmade history with her win.
Jayapal is an immigrants-rights activist, and she plans to fervently fight for social justice while in office.
President Barack Obama and Vice President Joe Biden have both endorsed her for the job.
This election, however, marks her first election win of the position.
