What is the Lagree method, and how is it similar and different from Pilates?

But while they are related, theyre also quite different.

First up, Pilates.

Shauna Harrison Ph.D.

The Lagree method started in 1998, and I tried it out for the first time four years later.

And he built his own machine to go along with it: the Megaformer.

What should you know before you take a Lagree method class?

Okay, so thats a quick rundown on what Lagree is, and how its related to Pilates.

Heres what I tell my students and friends before their first Lagree method class.

Really, like 10 to 15 minutes early, at least.

Many studios require them, but even if they dont, I would still highly recommend them.

Personally, my faves areToesox.

The grip will help your feet stay in place when youre pushing or pulling the carriage.

Its also more sanitary; theres a lot of feet on these machines.

The instructors are usually well trained to talk you through the moves, so listen for their cues.

This removes momentum from the equation and forces you to work in a slow and controlled manner.

), you wont feel like youre not getting enough movement.

The workout is hard AF and meant to overload a given muscle group.

This may make you shake.

There are no scheduled breaks!

Usually classes range from 40 to 55 minutes.

The Lagree method emphasizes very quick transitions from exercise to exercise to maximize the time in class.

This is not to say you cant take a break on your own.

If you need water or to regroup, stop (safely) and take it.

Remember, you are always in control of your own workout.

This is a mistake even us seasoned participants make (lookin at myself).

Much like yoga, being in a pike position with a full belly doesnt feel great.

You might find yourself a bit nauseous if you do some of the Lagree moves when youre full.

Time your meal or snack appropriately.

Especially if youre used tostrength training.

You will realize that rather quickly in Lagree!

Its normal for you to feel pretty sore, possibly in places you didnt know you could be sore.

And if at-home workouts are more your thing?

Basically, if youre curious about Lagree, try a class!

I hope that youll Lagree (couldnt help myself).
