In the 2015 world championships, they took home silver, and in 2016, bronze.

And they’ve medaled at the Four Continents Championship the past three years.

For their second Olympic appearance, Bates is also the U.S. figure skatingteam captain.

“The mental side offigure skatingis the biggest challenge,” Bates tells SELF.

“There are no opponents on the ice with you when you are out there competing.

So in a way, its really like you are competing with yourself.

I like that part about skating.

It’s always about trying to beat your best effort.”

Except for this pair, skating is also an experience they get to share as a couple.

“She brings a lot of light to my life.

“It’s almost like reading my favorite book,” Chock says of Bates.

Now, we are even more invested in our skating than ever before.

Because we have the same goals.

We are on the same page and know what we want.

To do that, we have to work together, Chock said.

You don’t get to the Olympics by staying up all night watching Netflix.

Chock and Bates bothsleepat least eight hours every night, although Chock is always down for more.

“Ill get 10 hours if I’m lucky,” she says.

Chock starts her morning with a glass of water.

For breakfast, she opts for a cup of flaxseed oatmeal.

“I like to add dried cranberries, fresh blueberries, and almond slivers,” she says.

Then, she takes her dog for a walk.

The first workout of the day is usually around two hours.

The pair heads back to the rink in the afternoon for skating workout number two.

Both Bates and Chocksnacka lot throughout the day to maintain their energy.

“I also sip Gatorade on the ice to keep my energy level up,” Bates says.

“The training never stops.

Chock coaches part-time and (fun fact!

)designs costumesfor other skaters.

Bates teaches English online to students in China.

The duo finish out their day with a nutritious meal.

“Mostly I eat chicken or fish, vegetables, and rice,” Bates says.

Then, they get to rest and play with their adorable dogs.
