Your new album,The ‘Ol Razzle Dazzle, just went to number one in Australia!
How does that feel?
It feels like a relief.
I feel so lucky that my fans are still interested and have stuck around.
Why did you take so much time off between albums?
I decided that I needed to step away for a bit.
What inspired you to come back to music?
This album was a real collaborative project.
People who follow their hearts regardless of what everyone else is telling them, or regardless of cultural conventions.
I’ve also got a really great family and my parents have a very inspirational relationship.
They are a really great example of love that can last.
Are there any words that you live by?
I always think of this metaphor: nothing that you want is upstream.
But, it shouldn’t be.
I think that happiness lies within just letting go and following what makes you truly happy.
You’re touring with Gotye this summer.
Tell us about that.
I’ve already done a couple of shows in San Francisco and one in L.A. that were really fun.
I’m doing his extensive tour, which starts mid-August.
Is it difficult to stay physically active when you’re touring?
When I’m traveling, I have to run.
That’s my therapy and a way of clearing my head.
If I go a couple of days without running I go a bit mad.
And there’s no excuse not to, there’s a gym in every hotel!
Is there a fun way you stay in shape?
I used to be obsessed with rock climbing.
In every city I went to, I use to find a rock climbing gym.
Then, I had a couple of injuries in a row.
Is it hard being a vegetarian and touring?
I find myself Googling every day where I can eat in each city.
What’s your guilty pleasure?
Oh, and chocolate is definitely my guilty pleasure!
What don’t your fans know about you?
Also, I want to meet a meerkat!
I’ve got a bit of an obsession with them.
My best friend and I have this thing where we send each other pictures of meerkats back and forth.
It’s so weird, not sure how we started that.
