If you thought you left that juvenile nonsense back in high school, think again.
Rumors can run rampant in the workplace, especially when employees are anxious, stressed out or envious.
First of all, why would seemingly mature coworkers or friends resort to spreading gossip about someone?
What’s the best way to approach someone who’s been spreading a rumor about you?
The best way is to de-energize it.
Let’s say someone has talked about you.
You needn’t be altruistic and nice to someone who has spread gossip about you.
You basically show the other person that you’re not frightened by it.
The more you become reactive, the more it seems “the lady doth protest too much”.
The person feels small and ‘found out’, and the salaciousness of the rumor loses it’s power.
Everyone says to ignore the rumor, but that’s easier said then done.
How can you move past it more quickly?
There are two ways; how one deals publicly and privately.
So, in a sense, you take control of it.
People just lose interest.
It naturally loses importance.
How can you steer a conversation away from negative gossip without sounding like a goody two-shoes?
You’re offering alternatives.
Again, you might email or just tell others to talk to you instead.
Most rumors are started because there’s little information; offering real information takes the punch out of it.
The mantra is this; be non-reactive.
I’m not saying not to have a reaction.
When I talk about reactivity, I’m talking about getting way too energized or emotional about something.
Most of us will surely feel reactive at first; that’s normal.
But the minute you get overly emotional, the rumor seems to become even more powerful.
Is it so wrong to want revenge?
It’s completely human.
It’s the first thing most of us will feel; it’s just how we are.
We just get reactive at first.
The issue is how we manage it.
Because we don’t necessarily get rid of emotion entirely, but we can certainly manage it better.
How can you turn that reactive energy into a more positive feeling?
Any kind of anxiety reduction technique.
Whether it’s exercise, running or yoga, or talking to people you’re close to.
You will get through this."
How did you handle it?
