Summer can be a sweaty, unpleasant time for a lot of folks.

Fortunately, there are ways to deal with the heat other than shunning it altogether.

It was like, do not sweat, avoid it at all costs, Marco recalls.

And for a while, I listened.

But now I find thats just not good advice.

More importantly, she says, working up a sweat sometimeshelpsherHS flares.

Marco made that discovery when her husband bought aninfrared saunafor himself and convinced her to try it.

But when I got up the next morning, she says, the flare was significantly reduced in size.

She looks for yoga gear because the material tends to be particularly soft and works well for her.

I find that loose clothing just makes the sweat sit on my skin, Marco says.

And theres more (skin) rubbing and chafing.

If you sweat, its okay, Marco says.

You cant avoid being human.

It can feel isolating when you visibly have HS.

you could get self-conscious.

Because her HS affects her arms, Bennett often skips the tank tops in favor of more coverage.

But then I tell myself, this is my body.

Just be in your body.

But she also knows thats easier said than done.

Im still working on it myself, Bennett says.

When she does find herself stuck in negative self-talk mode, her yoga breathing practices help.

So doesjournalingto remind herself that whatever has her down in the moment will pass.

Another confidence booster, Bennett says, is being well-prepared for any given day, especially in the summer.

I was like, what is happening to my body?

Luckily, McGill has come up with some hacks to help minimize the impact of hot weather.

Its not just the HS scars that might be conceived as unattractive, they point out.

For her, summer is, frankly, a nightmare.

(There are several on Facebook, for example, includingonethat Stevens cofounded.)

Finally, if you have access to a pool, Stevens suggests giving that a go.

Its a great way to cool off, andsome people find it soothing for their HS, she notes.

And you dont need to be a superhero, either!

No one should have to be uncomfortable to make other people comfortable.
