Like many people with endometriosis, Kattan has experiencedexcruciating period painand problems with fertility.

I feel a responsibility to publicly talk about it so that others feel comfortable talking about it too.

SELF: When were you first diagnosed with endometriosis?Kattan:It was in August 2019.

It got pretty bad at the beginning of 2018.

I did take maybe a bit more time to go to the doctor than I probably should have.

I never brought it up with my doctors.

I thought it was normal because I had heard that a lot.

When I was in university, the pain got so severe I couldnt go to classes.

I remember one time there was an exam and I was frozen with pain.

I completely failed that exam.

I find the biggest correlation is when Im very stressed.

Thats when I find the pain getting worse and more severe.

Im really trying to reduce my stress levels.

Id say its about 60% better, which is amazing.

I still am in pain, but its not as bad as it was before.

I also havepolycystic ovary syndrome[PCOS], and maybe that makes it worse.

I do so much research and still dont have answers.

Right now, Im at a place where I dont feel as debilitated.

However, it definitely gets more challenging year after year.

Im not going to lie.

Im ina lot of painmost of the time, so its challenging.

SELF: Do you feel it has impacted your mental health?Kattan:I dont know.

Were so busy, I dont know if I have time to think about mymental health.

I dont think so, because it is what it is.

What can I do?

I mean, it sucks.

The thing that I think bothers me about endometriosis is that theres not much information.

Thats the most annoying part.

SELF: Endometriosis often has an impact on fertility.

Has that been a concern for you?Kattan:Yes.

My husband and I have been married for 11 years.

At some point, surrogacy might be an option to consider.

Weve not actually decided whether were going to go the in-vitro route or not.

I love pressure, I love stress and moving fast.

Before, I never used to say no to anything.

Now the first thing I think about is, Is that going to stress me out?

And what is the return on investment?

And I say no to a majority of things now.

Its made me rethink how I live my life, and Im trying to take it easier.

Instead of traveling twice or three times a month, Im not even traveling on a monthly basis.

But I wish I had heard someone talk about having endometriosis when I was younger.

I dont think it was public or well-known enough at the time.

So I feel I should talk about it.

It will become more important if we all talk about it.
