I have always been in awe of “morning people.”

I love sleep, and have always tried to maximize the number of hours I can stay in bed.

It doesn’t help that I amconstantly tired, no matter how long I’ve slept.

So, I volunteered to try it.

“While getting the sunlight, it is important to hydrate and start up your circulatory system.

I woke up to my fiance poking me in the side and growling unintelligibly.

I peeled myself out of bed and went to a HIIT class that was truly beyond my capabilities.

I would rate my Monday morning at about a 3/10 for enjoyment.

So much for the 10:30 bedtime.

Really, the water didn’t do much to wake me up.

But when I went to wash up my bowl after dinner, I found a mouse in my kitchen.

And disinfecting everything in sight.

I fell asleep in the middle of scrolling through exterminator listings on Yelp.

So much for sleep hygiene, a bedtime routine, and avoiding sugar and alcohol after dinner.

I sat on the couch feeling sorry for myself.

I felt like my eyelids were made of cement, and my walk to the gym was purely miserable.

I was grumpy all day, natch.

And then I did it again.

And then I turned off all my alarms and blissfully slept until after 8.

Really this is about behavior, its not about feeling.

The feeling comes later.

But Kennedy also told me that it was OK to be skeptical about the whole endeavor.

Some of the way youre feeling is just a reaction to change, she said.

But maybe you dont need to be a morning person.

Morning people arent better than night owls in terms of their productivity, they are just differently productive.

I felt like a lightbulb had gone off.

I still work, exercise, read, and have funbut on a later schedule.

And that’s OK.

I re-downloadedSleep Cycle, an app I had used in the past.

By the time six rolled around, I was drinking a mimosa and feeling great about it.

I chalked this up to a win.

In conclusion, this was a bad week for me.

This is not one of them.

But it did, and the week was genuinely tough for me.

The thought of doing this for three more weeks had me saying “oh hell no.”

I hope to make that a regular habit.

But the rest of it… sucked.

I was sleepy and irritable all the time.

For those of you who can make this morning person thing work, I wholeheartedly salute you.

Eventually, the day will come when I have real-life responsibilities necessitating an early wakeup call.

Until then, I’ll be making the most of my A.M. snooze time.
