After the corrective surgery, doctors didn’t think it was possible for the torsion to recur.
Since it was initially undetected, the torsion caused more damage than the previous rounds.
The condition causesmenopause-like symptoms.
As a young girl, I envisioned growing up, getting married, and having kids, she says.
To know that wasnt going to be possible for me was probably the darkest time in my life.
Bartley ended up falling into adepression.
I felt very, very isolated and different from the kids my age, she says.
Then, after about nine months, one of her tests showed that she had some ovarian function.
Also worth noting that egg-freezing isn’t a sure thing, regardless of who’s getting it done.
We were asking ourselves if we would re-create the problem by trying to save some eggs, she says.
She understood the risks but says it was a no-brainer to go ahead with it.
Bartley ended up getting a grant from the Baby Quest Foundation, which helps people affordfertility treatments.
Chang was able to harvest and freeze 10 healthy eggs.
But Bartley wasnt able to receive another grant and couldnt afford the procedure on her own.
After that ended, it was like a crash, she says.
By the time I turned 17, I was almost 300 pounds, she says.
My health wasnt up to parit was another barrier that was keeping me from another round.
She began sharing her story onInstagramand built up a followingshe has 125,000 followers to date.
Bartley underwent the egg-freezing process again this March and was able to freeze nine more eggs.
“It’s such good news,” she says.
“I wasn’t expecting that.”
There arent any medical journals or cases to compare to because of my young age, she says.
Bartley says shes grateful that egg-freezing was possible for her, calling it a backup plan.
This is a peace of mind for me, she says.
