Let me start by saying: I have always been obsessed with shampoo.
My hair was so thick and full during my pregnancy! Here’s a before shot.
I loved going to the salon and having my hair washed with the best-smelling suds before a sleek blowout.
But then my hectic work schedule didn’t leave any time for a professional style.
So, I started washing and styling my own naturally curly hair.
After the birth of my son, my hair started to shed like crazy.
So my hair still looked (and felt) great with my weekly DIY routine.
Before pregnancy, my hair (though colored) was thick and full.
Id never experienced any sort of thinning.
To halt the thinning, I got a short haircut, started to wear my natural curls more often, and quit using sulfate shampoos.
Then, I’d straighten my curls with a blow dryer and flat iron at home.
When I got pregnant, my hair looked and felt even better than before.
My old styling methods no longer seemed to work.
Co-washing has added more moisture to my hair, so now I’m back to blowdrying my hair like normal.
No matter what throw in of shampoo and conditioner combination I used, my hair just wouldnt stop shedding!
As a beauty writer, Ive read all of the articles saying that sulfates are a no-no.
Sulfates are the ingredient in shampoo that gives you that luxurious, sudsy effect.
But since it’s like a detergent, it can also strip your hair of natural oilsand essential moisture.
So the first step in my hair routine makeover was to switch to sulfate-free shampoos.
But it still wasnt doing the trick.
My hair was still super dry and weak.
It was clear that my hair was in major need of some moisturizing magic.
So, I took my experiment to the next level, and gave co-washing a try.

Most women these days know that sulfates are bad for the hair, he tells SELF.
I let this sit in my strands for the duration of my shower before rinsing.
(Insert a praise dance here.)
This causes the strands to be susceptible to dryness and breakage.
Co-wash provides the hydration that curls aren’t getting from the scalp.
I will admit that I miss using shampoo sometimes.
Theres just something about singing in the shower with a pile of suds in your strands that I love!
I simply use an oil likeOGX Miracle In Shower Oilfirst.
it’s possible for you to also add the oil directly to your shampoo if youre strapped for time.
