Road Test Ob Ride Is a Cheerful—Yet Challenging—Take on Home Cycling Classes

All of my classes were less than 30 minutes and featured dance and pop soundtracks.

For Ride classes, you could use any punch in of stationary bike.

Obe gave me a complimentary membership to try their new indoor cycling classes.

So heres what I thought after testing out a few of the current Ride offerings.

There are two main categories of Ride classes, which you might take live or on-demand.

(If youre wondering how dance choreography works on a stationary bike, so was I!

Well get there.)

One thing I found to be lacking right now on the app is variety in cycling classes.

But more classes will be added on a rolling basis.

During the live ride, the instructor said hello and gave encouragement to specific people by their first names.

And it went a good five minutes longer than I thought it would go.

And that made it a bit challenging for me to plan ahead.

Even as a seasoned indoor cyclist, I found the classes challengingespecially the choreography.

Most of the classes available when I tested were quite short.

The majority of them ranged from 10 to 20 minutes, with one ranging at 45 minutes.

If you, like me, are thinking that 10 minutes sounds too easy, we are both wrong.

The classes may be short but theyre intense, with little to no warm-up or cool-down sections.

(They dobasically nothing but distract you.)

So, while a little annoying, I was fine with doing them.

For instance, at one point the instructor asked us to basically do side crunches while standing and pedaling.

Im sorry, you want me to do oblique handlebar push-ups with my legs moving?

No, thank you!

The Obe Ride vibe is minimalist, colorful, encouraging, and welcoming.

Although the style of the classes took some getting used to for me, I never felt too discouraged.

Obes guiding principle is to strive for five, meaning to aim to participate in five classes per week.

Another thing about Obe that I liked was how little information the app gives you during workouts.

displayed in the app, which is honestly welcome.

I use a Fitbit during workouts and thats all the data I need, frankly.

(Of course, also remember that you neverhaveto do the choreography if its not your thing.)
