SELF caught up with Sanders to talk inspiration behind the film and aging gracefully.

What was your inspiration behind About Face?

Was there a certain message you hoped the film would get across?

I went to a party a few years ago, hosted by hair guruHarry King and model Nancy Donahue.

I intended to stay for a few minutes, an “acte de presence” as it were.

I even double-parked my car outside the door.

Is this a theme that came about organically through your interviews?

Growing older, with grace, is fascinating to me.

These women were very open and honest about the challenges and joys of aging.

How do you think our perception of beauty (and the modeling industry) has changed?

Americans have become much more enamored of the modeling industry.

So many people seem to think it’s something they want for themselves.

Nowadays, mothers encourage their children to model!

What was the most inspirational part of interviewing so many legendary supermodels?

The women in About Face are all extraordinary.

Their backgrounds range from blue-collar to aristocracy and they all shared their extraordinary wit and wisdom with me.

I had so much fun interviewing all of them.

When we got into Sundance, we had to lock the film.

Otherwise, I’d still be working on About Face!

What can we look forward to next from you?

The Latino List: Volume 2, airs on HBO on September 24th.

I also working on The Women’s List and The LGBT List.

And, a secret new fashion doc.
