“So I go and I get off weed.

So they’re like, ‘We’re gonna try you on these meds.’

He figured his pot-smoking habit was the issue so he stopped smoking again.

But after three months, he didnt feel any differently.

“I found out I have BPD, which is borderline personality disorder,” he said.

“One of my psychiatrists [diagnosed me].

I’m depressed all the time.”

Davidson is now undergoing therapy and taking new medication for his BPD.

“It is working, slowly but surely,” he said.

“I’ve been having a lot of problems.

This whole year has been a fucking nightmare.

Its not uncommon for borderline personality disorder to be misdiagnosed as other disorders.

There is a big overlap in this and the symptoms can often look quite similar, he says.

But one of the key differences between the two is how often those mood swings present.

We all have personalities and bits of pieces of them that are helpful and unhelpful, Rego says.

The name is controversial because it basically says that somebodys personality is abnormal in some way, he says.

It was also seen as a condition that wasnt treatable.

Now the field has moved along and we have effective treatments for borderline personality disorder, he says.

People are feeling less stigmatized and more hopeful.

With DBT, patients use the concept of mindfulness, (i.e.

This typically goes on for a minimum of six months before patients graduate.

Dr. Borenstein explains that DBT is often combined with medications to reduce impulsive and self-destructive behavior.

However, medication isnt needed or used in all cases, Rego adds.

As with most mental health disorders, BPD can be a lifelong condition.

But it’s possible to get symptoms under control.

People can make great strides, Rego says.

That doesnt mean youre not vulnerable down the road or susceptible to flare-ups, but people can get better.
