In June she became the oldest goal scorer in team history in a friendly match against Jamaica.

Lloyd turned 39 years old on July 16, and shes showing no signs of slowing down.

Off the pitch, Lloyd is the highest paid female soccer player in the world.

Shes been an outspoken advocate for womens equal pay, especially in the USWNTsongoing lawsuitagainst the U.S. Soccer Federation.

Ive always lived an authentic life on and off the field, Lloyd tells SELF.

And I like to align myself with partnerships that truly speak to myself and what Im about.

Experiment to keep growing.

Each year Ive played, Ive tried to break barriers, Lloyd says.

I was a little hesitant at first, Lloyd says.

Prior to working with Halladay, as she mentioned on herInstagram, she stuck tobodyweight exercisesand soccer-specific running workouts.

Every movement, essentially, is a rhythm, she says.

Everything that we do in the sport is about vision.

Chris has been able to help push me and continue to make me fit, fast, and explosive.

Work out hard, but recover harder.

That means she had to keep her recovery game as strong as her on-field play.

That also means continuing to make these basics a priority, whether shes in season or off-season.

Im not taking months and weeks off at a time or eating terribly, or not getting enough sleep.

Its been constant, she says.

Starting in 2009, she made a conscious effort to eat whole, organic foods while limitingadded sugars.

She also makes sure to eat enoughprotein, especially post-game, for rebuild her muscles and improve recovery.

By continuing to keep her fueling routine steady, she says, you just continue to see an evolution.

As a result, Lloyd believes, her game is coming together in a more effortless way.

So in that regard, its become a little bit easier.

Use setbacks as motivation.

That hard-nosed work ethic stems back to her on-the-field trials earlier in her career.

In 2003 she was cut from the U.S. U-21 national team, as she wroteinThe Players Tribunein 2019.

So we worked 10 times harder, Lloyd wrote of setbacks inThe Players Tribunepiece.

For each hurdle shes faced, Lloyd has returned to the pitch even stronger and more motivated than before.

Its just about always finding ways to get better.
