But after she started a demanding job in finance four years ago, Nessa realized she’d gained weight.
“I was focused on my [work] and not on my body,” she toldCosmopolitan.
“I was making poor food choices, and I constantly felt stressed and tired.”
So she decided to make a change.
Nessa’s first step?
Setting her workouts early in the morning.
Sure, it was tough to adjust to her new 5 a.m. wake-up time.
Nessa followed through with this plan for six months before taking another step toward a fitter lifestyle.
Despite all her hard work over the first several months, Nessa noticed her progress was plateauing.
Though she thought she’d been eating healthily, she realized her portion sizes were a little inconsistent.
Her calorie intake would vary from 1,000 to 3,000 from day to day.
But the recommended calorie intake for an average woman isaround 2,000 calories.

But Nessa took the challenge in stride.
Nessa began eating five or six balanced mealsconsuming a total of 1,900 or 2,000 caloriesa day.
She’d refuel every three hours to avoid hunger or energy depletion.
This new nutrition routine meant a lot of pre-planning on Nessa’s part.
She had to pack three lunches to bring with her to work each day.
She balances cardio withhigh-intensity interval-trainingsessions, and she works in one full-body lifting session a week.
Throughout her fitness journey, Nessa has kept her eyes on the mirrorinstead of the scale.
Because she knows muscle is heavier than fat, Nessa doesn’t mind gaining a few pounds.
As long as she feels happy and healthy, she’s good to go.
Nessa’s success is a testament to the power of hard work and determination.
But she’s also an example of how a little expert advice can go a long way.
“Meal prep can be hard for the layperson, quite often.
They don’t really know what their body needs.”
It also kept her blood sugar steady.
