I’m comfortable in my own skin, which I feel is important.
I don’t need makeup to feel beautiful.

Glamour: What is your earliest makeup memory?
James Charles:I used to do hair before I did makeup.
Glamour: When did you start wearing makeup regularly?
I saw other guys doing it and have always been a fan ofRuPaul’s Drag Race.
I never expected it to escalate this quickly.
I actually don’t wear makeup regularlyin fact, I barely do at all!
I’mwaytoo lazy and sleep deprived to wake up every morning and do full glam.
Major props to people who can do that though.
Glamour: How supportive have your peers and parents been?
JC:Everyone has been extremely supportive and kind.
At first it was a rocky road with my parents because they didn’t really understand it.
Now they’re my No.
Glamour: How long have you been wearing makeup to school?
And like I said,waytoo lazy to get up!
Glamour: Why did you decide to wear makeup in your yearbook photos?

Glamour: Was there any pushback from the photographer when you brought in your own lighting equipment?
JC:Not at all.
Glamour: What was your reaction when your story went viral?
Glamour: How did you processZendayavoicing her support for you?
JC:Excessive flailing and screaming.
I love Zendaya and am a huge fan of hers.
She has actually noticed my makeup work before so it was SO rad to have her notice me again.
She’s so lovely and talented.
Glamour: Who do you look to for makeup inspiration?
JC:My absolute favorites areJaclyn Hill,NikkieTutorials, and Tati Westbrook.
They are all extremely successful influencers and I hope to be alongside them one day.
JC:Haha, yes.
I love to step outside of the box and challenge myself with new styles and concepts.
There are a lot of really popular guys in makeup right now.
JC:I think so for sure!
