Lane was dealing with symptoms that included pain and abdominal swelling.
But when Barron visited her daughter after she was admitted to the hospital, she knew something was off.
“I just took one look and I was just floored,” Barron says.

“She was extremely bloated and she had open wounds.”
According to Barron, the doctors said Lane might have a gallbladder issue.
“She was just getting worse by the minute,” Barron says.

At one point, Lane had to be airlifted to a hospital in Albuquerque where she was treated.
But her health became “much, much worse,” Barron describes.
Late symptoms of HPS include coughing and shortness of breath.
But Barron says that her daughter’s health continued to deteriorate over the course of a few months.
On April 18, Lane died.
“That virus took over everything and her body was done,” Barron tells SELF.
“Doctors exhausted every possibility.”
Barron wrote an emotionalFacebook postthat week recalling her daughter’s final moments.

Anyone who comes into contact with a rodent that carries hantavirus is at risk of contracting an infection.
Cleaning is a well-established risk factor for hantavirus, Dr. Adalja says.
Often you hear about cases of hantavirus where somebody cleaned out an old shed.
Hantavirus is quite rare in the U.S. Its a viral infection and its initial symptoms are very nonspecific, Dr. Schaffner explains.
Doctors are going to think about common illnesses first because they happen more frequently.
If doctors do suspect hantavirus, a blood test is needed toconfirm it.
Treatment is supportive measures, Dr. Spak says.
The hospital has to do everything it can to help the patient get through it.
When youre done cleaning, wash your hands thoroughly.
