Melissa Ventosa Martin: how has you fitness philosophy changed in the past five years it changed?
I did so much spinning and I was a dance cardio addict, but only sculpting once a week.
I was always thin but I had those few extra pounds that I just couldn’t lose.
MVM: What’s the most challenging part of this workout?
AA:I actually think the whole thing is so brutal.
You are never not using your whole body.
Even when you think you are just doing leg exercises you are still using your arms.
Your whole body is always moving.
I have been to other workout classes with friends and you have time to chat.
I can’t even talk in this one!
MVM: What do you think about when you work out?
AA:I attempt to really think about form.
So I really concentrate.
I have very tight hips so I have to really concentrate on keeping my hips square.
So as crazy as it sounds, I actually really think about the move and connecting to the muscle.
MVM: How do you motivate yourself when you’re not in the mood to workout?
I need to go, too.
MVM: Do you workout with friends?
AA:Yeah, I do!
I’ll try anything with anyone and I recruit people to come with me all of the time.
But everyone tells me I am too intense and they can’t keep up with me.
MVM: Even your friends who workout all of the time?
AA:Yes, because I’m crazy.
They all want to slack off and I am so into it for some reason.
If I am here for an hour, I want to some get work out of it.
I’m not good with working out on my own or at home.
I need a class or a trainer.
MVM: And what about during high-stress busy work times?
With fashion week coming up how do you balance your workout and social schedule?
So I ensure I go early.
AA:I will go but I will be home by 11.
I am a big creature of habit.
When things are going crazy I need something that stays the same.
I need to get up and have my coffee at the same time and go to the gym.
I need a routine.
MVM: and what about in terms of styleyour fitness gear.
What kind of things do you like?
Is it more minimal or do you like color?
AA:In my normal life I don’t wear a lot of color.
I wear a lot of black and no prints.
But for some reason I love a printed leggings.
MVM: It’s so true - you’re a little cooler in bold prints somehow.
When you’re working out, that is!
AA:I felt like I was a better dancer in my cooler clothes.
I felt like a cooler dancer when I had on my printed leggings.
And now I just love them.
The crazier the print, the better.
MVM: What are your go-to brands for fitness stuff?
AA:I love Nike.
I like this new line,Live the Process, and then this other new line calledOutdoor Voices.
It’s really cute.
MVM: You live close by to the studio, so you just throw on jeans and a coat?
Early in the morning I will put on cashmere sweats over my workout gear.
MVM: I noticed you have this huge bag and you have this amazing Fendi bag hidden inside.
AA:I always put my purse inside my bag.
MVM: That is so funny because we all do that!
MVM: Do you venture to eat before or after you workout?
Is there something specific that you have in the morning?
AA:I have protein shakes most morning or eggs.
And then I try and eat right afteryou know the whole protein within an hourI try and do that.
I am usually starving right after I work out.
